Steve Fredrickson Fellowship

Northwest Justice Project (NJP) created this Fellowship in 2015 to honor Steve Fredrickson’s lifetime of service to meeting the civil legal needs of low-income persons in Washington. In 1970 Steve Fredrickson joined the Legal Aid community starting as a law clerk with Seattle Legal Services Center, continued as a staff attorney with Evergreen Legal and Columbia Legal Services, and completed his career as an Advocacy Coordinator with the NJP.

Initially, the Steve Fredrickson Fellowship will fund a summer internship for a law student who has demonstrated commitment to redressing the housing and/or consumer rights of the poor. Over time NJP aims to make this a full year fellowship. The Steve Fredrickson Fellowship will support innovative advocacy projects to effectively address the housing/consumer needs of low-income persons in Washington.

The NJP Steve Fredrickson Fellowship is a staff driven effort to honor Steve’s work by enabling generations of new lawyers and law students to carry on the mission of justice in the areas of housing and consumer rights. Steve was pivotal in the ATJ Board’s creation of a Law School Coordinating Committee which encourages law student participation in equal justice community efforts.

Steve Fredrickson is best known for his work in the areas of housing law and consumer protection.  Steve literally co-wrote the book on Landlord-Tenant law and contributed to the development of tenant protections in Washington State through important appellate cases that still define basic rights of habitability, and due process. Steve’s work expanded tenant’s ability to preserve access to low-income housing through protections from displacement and against discrimination.

Steve’s contributions are legion and cover a vast array of substantive law and procedure including litigation, appeals, legislative and policy development, training and mentorship, comfort in the face of challenges, wisdom, sage advice and much, much more. Over the course of his 45 years in legal services, Steve has lent his expertise to hundreds of legal aid lawyers and advocates and united with them in the fight for justice.

This fellowship creates the opportunity for Steve Fredrickson’s exemplary career to influence generations of attorneys to come. To support the Steve Fredrickson Fellowship, please donate:
